Drivetrain and Powertrain – Know the Differences

Porsche drivetrain vs powertrain

How are powertrain and drivetrain different? In brief, the drivetrain gives power to the wheels. The powertrain consists of both the motor and the drivetrain.

Drivetrain and Powertrain

You may not know off the top of your head what the advantages are of comparing a drivetrain vs. powertrain yet when you understand the distinctions between the two, it will certainly give you the edge when cars and truck buying, seeing the auto mechanic, or when Alex Trebek asks you a Jeopardy question regarding automobile components that make cars move.

Simply put, powertrains and drivetrains essentially do the exact same thing. They produce kinetic energy to make your vehicle ‘go’. Now, chances are that you’ve never actually thought of exactly how vital these moving components are. They’re the unrecognized heroes that get you from point A to point B and they each work in their own special way.

What are the Drivetrain Components?

Many times the terms ‘drivetrain’ and ‘powertrain’ are used interchangeably however, contrary to popular belief, they are not the same. So just what is the distinction between powertrain components and drivetrain components? The biggest distinction is the way power is generated and dispersed to the vehicle.

A drivetrain is not really a solitary part of your car – it’s a group of drivetrain parts that interact with the engine to move the wheels and different parts of the vehicle to drive it into motion. These parts often include the transmission, differential, driveshaft, axles, CV joints, and the wheels.

Drivetrain: How Does it work?

This is the order in which power is generated and provided by a drivetrain:

  • The engine will produce energy to power a flywheel
  • That flywheel works with the transmission to control the amount of power dispersed to other components of the drivetrain
  • The driveshaft rotates to create power to a differential
  • The differential then supplies power from all those driveshaft components and boom … your wheels are moving

What is in A Powertrain?

If you understood the drivetrain fundamentals, the powertrain basics should be an easy concept to understand, because of the reality that there is just one defining factor that sets them apart. That variable is the engine. In a powertrain, the engine is a part of the many moving components. If you remember from the paragraph above, the drivetrain collaborates with the engine.

The powertrain includes every moving component that is critical to the vehicle’s success. Its single objective is transforming kinetic energy into propulsion movement. If one of these parts fail your car may experience some uncommon rattling, or shaking.

Mr. Arpin at Porsche El Paso was very professional and courteous. He keep us informed about every step they were doing to our Macan and why it needed to be done. The car was checked for any maintenance needed. We had no idea that one of the front tires had a nail and Mr. Arpin immediately notified us about replacing the tire with a new one even though the tire has less 1000 miles; a new tire was installed. Thank you Porsche El Paso for having Mr. Arpin as a Service Consultant at this location; he is so polite and respectful.
