It had not been that long ago that the idea of Porsche making anything besides 2-door sports cars was considered sacrilegious. Now the German automaker has a 4-door sedan and 2 Sport Utility Vehicles and remarkably Porsche endured the ‘crusade’ generated by the air-cooled purists. The 2019 Porsche Cayenne represents the 3rd generation of the original Porsche Sport Utility Vehicle and it’s better than ever. Today the 2019 Porsche Cayenne takes on the 2019 BMW X5, the grandfather of German luxury SUVs.
Neither the 2019 Cayenne nor the 2019 X5 is the solution for boring, underpowered SUVs. The X5 has either a 3.0L TwinPower Turbocharged 6-cylinder or a 4.4 L TwinPower Turbocharged V8 to pick from. The 6-cylinder generates 335 horsepower while the V8 makes 456 horse power, and while those numbers are strong, the brand-new Cayenne is a lot more powerful. Giving the option of 2 6-cylinders, a gas-electric hybrid variation, and a V8, the Cayenne has something for every person. Like the BMW, the base 6-cylinder engine makes 335hp but the 4.0L TwinTurbocharged V8 on the Cayenne Turbo makes 541hp! The Cayenne surpasses the X5 in power as a result of a stronger engine and an offered gas-electric hybrid drivetrain.
Both the Porsche and the BMW lean greatly on familial styling. The X5 depends heavily on the twin-kidney grille to tell you that it’s a BMW. The Porsche Cayenne plays a comparable trick with the head and taillight styling, it’s extremely reminiscent of its Porsche brethren. Both Sport Utility Vehicles are commanding to look at and as muscular as the BMW looks, the Porsche looks just as intimidating, just in a sleeker trim.
Both SUVs are richly configured and engulf you in opulence. While the X5 has a complete electronic user interface, the Cayenne chooses a mix of classic style digital. The tachometer is analog, flanked by a digital display on either side. It really is a good setup. A HUD, Adaptive Cruise, Heated Steering Wheel, and Heated/Cooled seating are several of the functions you’re able to get in either vehicle. You can not go wrong with either automobile.
We aren’t nearly to the point of having autonomous automobiles, yet (we’re waiting, Elon!) but the innovation that is now available in both SUVs is impressive. Technology like night vision and Lane Keeping Assist (with traffic sign recognition!) are just a couple of ways that the Cayenne works to keep you safe. With features like optional Adaptive Cruise Control, Rear Parking Aid and available All Wheel Steering, both of these SUVs are packed with modern technology.
The all-new 2019 X5 is a great vehicle, but the 2019 Cayenne is the better driver’s car of the two. Neither car is likely to see any off-road action, so it comes down to which of these mall crawlers does a better job as a ‘car’. Both cars are extremely nice, but the Cayenne is just more fun to drive. The Porsche wins this hotly contested matchup.

And after looking at my car, found other things that I needed to take care of. They found a gouge in my tire that could have been a problem if it blew out on the highway. I took my Porsche Macan S in for its 80,000 mile service. Porsche of El Paso provided me excellent customer service. They explained all that they were going to do to my car upfront. And after looking at my car, found other things that I needed to take care of. They found a gouge in my tire that could have been a problem if it blew out on the highway. My service was completed as promised and very quickly. Cesar, my service tech was very helpful and kept me informed of the progress. I can’t say enough about him. They even gave me a ride home so I wouldn’t have to wait at the dealership. I highly recommend Porsche of El Paso both for sales and service. On the sale side, Juan Carlos Jurado is fantastic!
